The Rowing Wayfinder is a coaching framework that integrates on-water Technical Coaching and off-water Movement Coaching for the goal oriented, intrinsically motivated rower with proven self-efficacy dedicated to improved and reliable rowing performance.
Wayfinding is the process of embarking upon a purposeful, intentional, self-regulated journey that takes an individual along an evolving path. Wayfinding is not knowing before you go, but rather knowing as you go. Wayfinding is not a prescriptive process. As such, the Wayfinding process is an ongoing, iterative conversation that evolves into a working alliance between the experienced practitioner and the athlete.
Underpinning the on-water wayfinding framework is an off-water targeted motor learning process that will expand your repertoire of movement solutions, recalibrate and restore your coordination efficiency following a competitive season or absence from the boat, and accelerate the development of reliable technical skill.
The Rowing Wayfinder Framework:
tRW is a platform from which to collaborate with other experts in their fields in order to provide the client a unique, collaborative learning and performance experience of Wayfinding.
tRW is here:
...when you have exhausted the limits of sheer will, dedication and other resources. The tRW strategy will exploit your brain's inherent neuroplasticity, employing a skill learning approach that will allow you to periodize the development of your technical mastery. You will not be fed into an App. Your goal will be at the center of the process. We will engage through conversation, assessment and guided attention to find the way to better movement and reliable performance.
A Conversation
Developing a positive, focused working alliance through ongoing iterative conversation, the tRW experience utilizes targeted questioning to allow for the athlete's exploration of the environment and task solutions. In collaboration with the experienced practitioner, and based on proprietary assessment tools and with recognition of the individuality of the learning process, the athlete will be guided to re-organization of action to find their way through emerging and novel performance problems. This process will allow for the development of stable and consistent technique that is resistant to performance anxiety.
Motor Learning Experience
The learning process is specifically designed for the individual's unique situation and experience and is developed following on-water & off-water assessment and in conjunction with client specific goals. It is progressive & ongoing, each session a stepping stone to the next. tRW coaching method will allow you to explore and navigate the environment & the task, guiding your attention to learning opportunities to allow for movement solutions to spontaneously emerge.

John Lindberg
Educator, Rowing Coach
John began his professional career as an academic teacher, multi-sport coach and educational administrator for 18 years. In addition, John accumulated extensive experience in project management. His passion for the coaching role inspired him to pursue full-time coaching at the Division 1 level for fifteen years working with Boston based University teams. For the past 5 years John has served as the Director of Rowing for the Union Boat Club in Boston.
John began rowing at St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH as a means to stay in shape for hockey, a team he led as a captain his senior year. In the boat, he was only asked to pull harder. John continued on at Brown University where he competed on both the varsity hockey and rowing squads. John has won medals at Eastern Sprints and IRA's as both a competitor and coach. He has also competed internationally for the US as both competitor and coach. Additionally, John is a Henley Royal Regatta and Head of the Charles champion.
A teacher at his core, John’s collective reflection on these experiences has found resonance and definition in the Wayfinding process of teaching and learning.
